Drive across the Great Rift Valley through Masai villages and by the Longonot satellite station as you head to the town of Narok. Pass through the fields of wheat and barley before reaching the rolling grasslands of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Arrival and check in at the Julia’s River Camp in time for lunch. Afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight.
ABOUT MASAI MARA RESERVE
The Masai Mara Game Reserve is often called simply “The Mara” – a Masai word meaning “mottled” – a reference to its patchy landscape. The Reserve covers 1,510 sq km (580 sq miles) and raises 1,500-2,170 meters above sea level. The terrain of the reserve is primarily grassland and riverine forest with clumps of distinctive acacia trees. It is about 270 km from the capital city Nairobi and takes about 5-6 hours by road or 40-45 minutes by flight. The wildlife of the Masai Mara is world-renowned, with the so-called “Big Five”- buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhinoceros – evident throughout the year. The “Big Nine” – including cheetah, zebra, giraffe and hippo – extends this experience. The Masai Mara also plays host to the ‘Annual Migration’ but whatever the time of year the resident wildlife will surely enthrall and entertain all who visit this wondrous reserve. Finally let us not forget the colorful inhabitants of this exceptional landscape. The Masai are a proud semi-nomadic cattle-rearing people with a fascinating culture, divided into a number of sub-tribes some of which share the Mara region. The Masai are an ever-present reminder of the history and cultural heritage of this sublime and enigmatic landscape, and will surely leave a lasting impression for all.
Day 2: Masai Mara
Sunrise game drive. After breakfast, leave with picnic lunch boxes for a full day exploration of the wilderness. Optional visit to a Masai village in the mid-morning. You will return to the camp in the late afternoon on time for a refreshing shower, followed by time round the fire exchanging stories of the day with the other guests. Candlelit dinner completes the day, after which you will be escorted to your room.

The park embodies five main wildlife habitats (open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush country, swamps and marshland) and covers part of a Pleistocene lake basin, now dry. Amboseli is famous for its big game and its great scenic beauty. Mount Kilimanjaro broods high over Amboseli, generally cloaked by clouds but appearing in all its snow-shrouded magnificence from time to time. Kilimanjaro was once part of Kenya, but on the marriage of Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany Queen Victoria gifted it to her beloved grandson, whose colony Tanzania then was, as the perfect wedding present. The mountain now provides water for the park, wonderful views and, of course, the most glorious background for animal photography.
